Why I built this

THE STORY BEHIND MULTIPLY ME

“15 years ago a worker was electrocuted on one of my scaffolds.”

I’d been in construction for 15 years by then. Scaffolding. Residential. I’d employed over 350 blokes through the business. Guys in and out of jail. Guys on drugs. Good blokes mostly — just rough around the edges. That’s the construction industry.

When the accident happened, my heart sank. First thought: is he okay? Second thought — almost immediately: what happens to me now? That second thought is the elephant in the room that every business owner lives with. Whether you acknowledge it or not, there’s an element of fear. If one of your boys gets hurt, how do you stand?

I spent 10 years in the Melbourne Magistrate Court. $280,000 fine. And I learned that everything comes down to one thing: can you prove you trained your crew? Not verbally. Not with signatures on paper. Documented, timestamped, ongoing proof.
